Kiri Ora Programme

Huria Trust provide a weekly school-based throat-swabbing programme to help reduce the high rates of Rheumatic Fever in the Western Bay.

Huria Trust also provide a school-based Kiri Ora (Skin Health) programme to help reduce the amount of skin infections. There is a strong link between skin health and Rheumatic Fever.

The Strep A bacteria can lead to Rheumatic Fever and may be found in sore throats and skin infections. If left untreated it can lead to Rheumatic Heart Disease. Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease are highly preventable.

The Kiri Ora programme will consist of an assessment of the sore/s. A photograph may be taken of your child’s sore, this photo will only be used for clinical purposes and passed onto a clinical lead or Pharmacist for further clinical assessment and a course of antibiotics may be given FREE of charge. In some instances, a throat swab may also be required. A Community Health Worker will contact you and arrange drop off/collection of the antibiotics.

All results and data will be securely stored as per any specimen taken, on Pathlab, GP and Huria Trust secure systems.

This service will be offered to all students at the school. If you wish to opt your child out of this programme, please indicate upon enrolment by selecting the ‘OPT OUT’ option, or get in touch with the school office.

Any further questions, please contact the Rheumatic Fever Prevention team.
